Mission

As a church we are committed to serving our community in whatever way possible.  We believe that as Christians we are called to show and tell of Christ's love and Salvation, explicitly or implicitly by who we are and what we do, such as being warm and welcoming, having a building which is inviting and being with people at their point of need.

Vision

Our vision is for St John’s to be a community without walls, a community which models the qualities that God values; compassion, love, generosity and willingness to serve. We will strive to be a beacon of light to the community by our warm welcome, where each person feels valued and appreciated. God’s Word underpins all we do, and our faith is grounded in the truth of the |Trinity - God the Father sending his son Jesus to bring us back to him, and in the Holy Spirit, who guides us in our daily lives. Being part of the Diocese of Norwich, we see the church’s ministry as being about how we live our life together, for the flourishing of every person.

Our History

Our church was originally purposely built ‘for the poor’. In 1843 John Motteux was forbidden to sit in a pew at nearby St Nicholas’ Chapel because he had not paid for it. He therefore offered £1,000 for a new church to be built where seats would be free to all. That church became St John the Evangelist, designed by Victorian architect Anthony Salvin and completed in 1846.Nowadays, we continue to honour the original sentiment of John Motteux by offering a warm welcome to all who choose to visit us.
St John’s was the first Anglican church built in King’s Lynn since the Reformation, and contains interesting corbels, stained windows and organ.
