v Faith Reflections - Individual Explorations on Moments of God's Grace and Presence

This part of the website explores individual 'reflections' of moments in indivindual's lives where they have experienced a 'spiritual moment', an event that has perhaps made them feel the presence of God amongst them. Like the 'Faith Journeys', these reflections are very personal. We can sometimes feel God's presence in our lives at some of the most unexpected times and places. Explore below what members of St John's have experienced for themselves.

When: 2004
Where: Borneo
Time: Sunny afternoon
Event: A holiday

Weddings at St JohnFollowing a lengthy divorce I took off for 3 weeks in Borneo. One afternoon a small group took a trip to a small island for jungle walking and swimming. The sea was full of sea snakes and jelly fish so all we could do was sit on the beech under the shade of the trees.

Someone said: “The local church put a Chinese dragon over the cross to make the Chinese community feel welcome – what did I think of it”? We had three hours before the boat returned to take us back.

As we sat there people kept asking questions about believing in Jesus. It was a great opportunity for me to share my faith but I also felt this is just how Jesus did it and I felt I had been very close to God myself that day.

When: Some years ago, week before Easter
Where: Spring Harvest, Big Top – Skegness
Time: Evening
Event:Celebration service

We queued outside the Big Top in the cold wind waiting for the doors to open. Once inside the warm there was an excited buzz as the band played before the service started. We sang a hymn I had not sung before which blew my mind: “Before the throne of God above”.

Five thousand people singing this wonderful hymn was one of my most memorable experiences, but I was particularly struck by the words: “Stand up before the great high priest, whose name is love. Whoever lives and pleads for me – my name is graven on his hands…” What a picture! This gave me such an amazing sense of worship of what Jesus has done for me. Every time we sing this hymn I am reminded of that wonderful occasion.

Good Friday, a time to show our town of King’s Lynn its true meaning. The churches of the area meet together and walk around the shopping area, stopping at various points to sing, pray and read the Bible.

We carry a large wooden cross and our hope is that we will help people to stop and think of the true meaning of the season. We finish up at the large town church where we sing a rousing hymn on entering, and have coffee and hot cross buns. This is an annual event but it never ceases to fill me with joy, hope and a wonderful feeling of God’s presence.
